Google is adding a new touch to its line of Chrome laptops in an attempt to outshine personal computers running on software made by rivals Microsoft and Apple.

The search giant announced Thursday the arrival of its latest cloud-computing portable computer. The new Chromebook Pixel includes a 13-inch display screen that responds to the touch or swipe of the finger. That’s a key feature in Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 8, a dramatic makeover of the world’s leading operating system for PCs.

The Pixel’s high-resolution screen displays 239 pixels per inch, slightly more than Apple Inc.’s MacBooks with high-resolution Retina displays.

Google will begin selling the Pixel on Thursday in its Web store, Play. A laptop with Wi-Fi and 32 gigabytes of flash storage will sell for $1,299. A 64-gigabyte machine that can connect on a 4G LTE network will cost $1,499.

Despite the talk of the PlayStation 4 becoming something of a graphics powerhouse, a new report suggests the importance of internal upgrades will be tossed aside in favor of “new playing options.”

Sony plans to make a host of “new playing options” in its next console the focus of the device when it’s unveiled on February 20, Japan-based news outlet Nikkei is reporting today, citing an unidentified Sony Computer Entertainment official. Engadget was first to report on the Nikkei’s findings.

Rumors have suggested that Sony will unveil a major upgrade to its PlayStation 3. Those rumors have said that the company could include an eight-core AMD processor and other major hardware updates. However, the Nikkei’s report, according to Engadget, seems to suggest that if Sony delivers new higher-powered components in its next device, they’ll take a backseat to the playing options.
Related stories

So, what sort of playing options are coming? According to Engadget, the Nikkei’s source says the console will be able to connect with mobile devices and share data across the two devices. Multiscreen efforts have long been a component in Sony’s strategy. The company’s PlayStation Vita, for example, can sync up with the PlayStation 3 to create a dual-screen gaming experience.

The source also indicated that Sony was planning to turn the next PlayStation into a “nerve center” for home entertainment and would be unveiled at Sony’s February 20 event. The console is expected to launch at some point later this year.
CNET has contacted Sony for comment on the Nikkei report. We will update this story when we have more information.

AMD boasts the parts should be up the 70% faster than the previous 7000 generation, but of course that will have to be put to the test to find out.

Either way, prepare to have more fun fragging friends on whether in Battlefield, Call of Duty, with detail never before possible on a laptop.

Specifics should be released at CES next January.

Lights, camera, action !A Florida man was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges in connection to hacking the e-mail accounts of actress Scarlett Johansson and dozens of other celebrities.

Christopher Chaney, 36, of Jacksonville, Florida, had hijacked photos that Johansson took of herself in the nude. They appeared online and showed her looking seductively at a phone camera as she snapped images of her bare breasts while lying on a bed. Another image showed her bare backside, taken as she looked into a mirror.

Chaney told a local Florida news station last year that his hacking began simply as a “curiosity” but soon turned into an addiction for stealing celebrity secrets.

“It just happened and snowballed,” he said. “I didn’t know how to stop doing it myself.”

Some of Chaney’s victims also include Christina Aguilera, Mila Kunis and Renee Olstead. Dozens of other victims are identified by initials only.

U.S. District Judge S. James Otero of Los Angeles sentenced Chaney after reviewing a videotaped statement from a tearful Johansson.

Chaney, who used the online nicknames “trainreqsuckswhat,” “anonygrrl,” and “jaxjaguars911,” was indicted (.pdf) on nine counts of computer hacking, eight counts of aggravated identify theft, and nine counts of illegal wiretapping. His nickname “trainreqsuckswhat” is a reference to another alleged celebrity hacker named Josh Holly who told Threat Level in 2008 that he had hacked Miley Cyrus’ email account and stole suggestive photos of her that were later posted online.

Chaney was able to guess the passwords celebrities used for their email accounts by monitoring their social media accounts for possible clues — such as a pet’s name — that might point to a password.

HTC is once again preparing the launch of a flagship Android handset, according to a previously reliable source, among whose cutting-edge components will reportedly be several industry firsts. Known by its codename, M7, the top-of-the-line device will debut at a critical juncture for the Taiwanese manufacturer, as it looks to reverse a series of disappointing quarters.

Like the One X before it, the M7 is supposedly slated for a Mobile World Congress unveiling — and although it won’t quite match the One X’s bar-raising inclusion of a quad-core processor, the M7 will be one of the first full HD handsets in the 4.7-inch class, giving it a reported pixel density of 468PPI (over 40% higher than the iPhone 5, with which it will share optical lamination technology). What’s more, this so-called SoLux display is said to offer a number of visual improvements over the previous generation Super LCD2, boosting viewing angles, outdoor visibility, and color accuracy.

Supposedly powering the M7 is a second-generation quad-core processor from Qualcomm, clocking in at 1.7GHz per core, alongside 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal flash storage. The LTE-capable device is expected to ship running Android Jelly Bean, skinned with the latest iteration of HTC’s love-it-or-hate-it UX enhancement, Sense 5.

A new full length trailer for Star Trek: Into the Darkness has been released, and to quote Samuel L. Jackson from Jurassic Park, “Hold onto your butts.” Thrill ride seems like an understatement as Star Trek goes dark, with a trailer deep with CGI special effects and characters making grim faces.

Can May 2013 come soon enough? Here’s the synopsis from Paramount.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

lantronics have annouced their highest end headset yet, the GameCom Commander. I had a chance to take a look at one at QuakeCon earlier this month and was very impressed by the durability and features of the headset. The headset harkens back to the military roots of the company.

It boasts amazing noise cancelling features which came in handy as the cheers and yells were going up at QuakeCon I was able to listen to music pristinely through the headphones. The build quality was also exceptional in the time that we had with the headset.
